למה אומרים קריאת שמע על המיטה? איך אנו מתייחסים ליסורים? מה זה יסורים של אהבה? האם יש דרך לדעת אם היסורים הם מאהבה או לא? למה צדיק ורע לו? איך אפשר לנחם אנשים שסובלים? ר’ יוחנן קבר עשרה ילדיו והיה מראה לאנשים את העצם של העשירי כדי להראות להם אמונתו. האם זה בסדר לגנוב ממי שגנב ממך?

Why do we say Shema at night in bed? How do we view suffering? What is “suffering out of love”? Is there a way to know if the suffering is because you sinned or is it suffering out of love. Why do good things happen to bad people? How can we comfort others who are suffering? Rabbi Yochanan lost 10 children and would show people his faith by carrying the bone of his tenth son. אם באמת משה ודוד לא ידעו מתי חצות? מתברר שהם כן ידעו. אם כן, למה משה אומר כחצות ולמה דוד צריך את הכנור לנגן? במה היה דוד חסיד? איך היה שונה ממלכים אחרים? איך הגיב כשמפיבושת היה מתקן אותו? במה היה כלאב בנו מיוחד? למה מנוקד על המילה לולא בתהלים – “לולא האמנתי לראות בטוב ה'”? איך יכול להשפיע החטא על מהלכים שאמורים לקרות? למה אמרו חכמים שאפשר להקרוא קריאת שמע “עד חצות”?מי שעובר על דברי חכמים בעניין זה, חייב מיתה. למה זה כל כך חמור? האם צריך לסמוך גאולה לתפילה בערבית – ז”א האם מתפללים קודם עמידה ואחר כך קריאת שמע או ההיפך? מהו הבסיס לכל אפשרות? אם אומרים תהלה לדוד ג’ פעם בכל יום, מובטח לו שהוא בן העולם הבא. למה? למה חסר אות סמ”ך באשרי?

Does one need to mention redemption right before shmone esrei in maariv – meaning does one say shema before or after shmone esrei? What is the basis for each opinion? If one says ashrei 3 times a day, one is guaranteed entry in the World to Come. Why? Why is the letter samech missing from ashrei?

לפי ר’ אליעזר, אפשר להגיד קריאת שמע עד סוף האשמורה הראשונה. כמה משמרות היו? שלוש או ארבע? מהן סימנים של כל משמר? ר’ יוסי נכנס לחורבה להתפלל. פגש שם אליהו בחוץ שהוכיח אותו על כך שנכנס לחורבה והתפלל שם. למה אסור להיכנס לחורבה? האם דוד המלך התעורר בחצות? או לפני חצות? איך ידע מתי היה חצות אם משה רבנו לא ידע מתי חצות?

Rabbi Eliezer says one can say shema until the end of the first watch. How many watches were there? Three or four? What are signs of each watch? Rabbi Yosi went into a ruin and prayed. Eliyahu Hanavi rebukes him for doing that. What are the three reasons why people can’t go into a ruin? Did King David wake up at midnight? Or before? How did he know even when midnight was if even Moshe Rabeinu didn’t know?

מאיזה שעה עד איזה שעה אפשר להתפלל קריאת שמע? למה התחילה הגמרא כאילו באמצע נושא? למה התחילו בערבית? למה נתנו הסבר לזמן (משעה שהכהנים נכנסים לאכול בתרומתן) ולא ציינו את הזמן במפורש (צאת הכוכבים)? הגמרא מביאה כמה ברייתות שדנים באותה שאלה ומביאים תשובות אחרות. האם מקורות אלו סותרים את משנתינו או מתארים את אותו זמן אבל בדרך אחרת? מהן הדעות השונות שמובאות בברייתות לגבי זמן תחילת קריאת שמע?

What is the time range in which one can say the prayer of Shema at night? Why did the mishna start in mid topic? Why with the night prayer and not the morning prayer of Shema? Why did they describe the time based on an action and not in a time frame connected to the sun (from when three stars come out)? The gemara brings several braitot that deal with the same question but bring different answers and the gemara tries to figure out what the different times are and how these different sources work together.
